Duration: August 2019 to November 2019
Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF), a non-government and non-profit organization works with local organizations to improve the well-being of poor and marginalized communities. MJF provides support to the NGOs for implementing sustainable projects for the targeted population. MJF also supports the NGOs to protect the rights of the migrant workers of Bangladesh. As a part of it, MJF approached DEVCOM to conduct two baseline surveys, which were implemented by BILS (Bangladesh Institute of Labor Studies) and BASTOB.
The first baseline survey conducted for BILS was for a project titled, ‘Migrant Workers Empowerment. The report outlines the present socioeconomic situation of migrant workers in Manikganj. The second baseline survey was conducted for BASTOB for the project ‘Making Migration Safe and Respectful for both Potential and Returnee Migrants in Bangladesh’. The report illustrates the present socioeconomic situation of migrant workers in three areas of Dhaka district, namely Keraniganj, Nawabganj and Dohar. In both of the researches, DEVCOM evaluated the existing condition of both returnee and potential migrant workers in the areas. While the research primarily aimed to focus on potential women and returnee migrant workers, it has also looked at the current situation of male migrant workers in the region, which includes both returnee and potential migrant workers. The research has brought together several distinctive key indicators related to the potential and returnee migrants’ wellbeing, livelihood, psychosocial wellness and reasons for migration.
